I can answer with a little more clarity exactly what Leadership Las Vegas is all about now that my class has completed our Gateway session. I suspect, however, that it won’t be until our graduation that I can provide any meaning.
The point of Leadership is the development of community leaders. How is that done? Exercises, education, and insight from current leaders. What have we done so far to help achieve this? We started by lowering our barriers and learning about ourselves and each other. Over the course of nearly the entire Gateway (51.5 hours) we were not allowed to talk about work. That leaves 44 members of the class along with about 10 previous graduates serving as guides with everything in the world to discuss except for work. The first hour was a little touch-and-go but once you get over it, there really isn’t a problem. The bit of Gateway (1.0 hour) everyone gathered as we reintroduced ourselves by telling each other what we do for a living and what we were taking away from our time together. I’ll be honest, I didn’t remember what most people did until I went back to the roster.
We did some other exercises and I will write more about those when time permits. I’ll also write about the education and insight as our class moves through the program, but for now I can only say how much influence not saying something had over me.
While there is ton more to write about, I had two problems. One you can read about here. The other you will have to wait to hear about unless you have already heard about my time in the hospital bed.
You were in the hospital and I have to read about it on your blog?!?
@Jen,
By the way, Jen. I was in the hospital. It is a strange story and I should tell you some time.
amazing perspective, brian… i truly enjoyed the meetings after the meetings and agree completely about the SWAG. since when was it about the “stuff”?
@lisa
What a terrific weekend and what a completely random bag of stuff that didn’t apply in any way to what we were trying to accomplish as a group. They could have given us each a tire.
Skylar: Maybe we could go out for coffee sometime?
Will: Great, or maybe we could go somewhere and just eat a bunch of caramels.
Skylar: What?
Will: When you think about it, it’s just as arbitrary as drinking coffee.
